Rainer Maria Rilke’s lyric poetry has always fascinated me. Rilke’s texts are actually already music; they are a figure that one still has to simply chisel out of the metaphorical stone. On the one hand, this choral composition is a reflection on nature and the transience of life; on the other hand, it also portrays how one can joyfully relish the beauty of life. In the 2021 ISCM Composition Competition for equal voices the men’s choir version of this piece won first prize. In February 2023 it was successfully premiered by the Male Voices Basel under the direction of Eric Whitacre.

Été: être pour quelques jours
le contemporain des roses;
respirer ce qui flotte autour

Die Lyrik von Rainer Maria Rilke hat mich seit jeher fasziniert. Rilkes Texte sind eigentlich schon Musik, sie sind eine Figur, die man einfach noch aus dem metaphorischen Stein meißeln muss. Diese Chorkomposition ist zum einen eine Reflexion über die Natur und die Vergänglichkeit des Lebens, stellt zum anderen aber auch dar, wie man die Schönheit des Lebens freudvoll genießen kann. Beim ISCM-Kompositionswettbewerb 2021 für gleiche Stimmen hat die Männerchorfassung des Stückes den ersten Preis errungen. Im Februar 2023 wurde es mit den Männerstimmen Basel unter der Leitung von Eric Whitacre erfolgreich uraufgeführt.

Été: être pour quelques jours
le contemporain des roses;

Sommer: ein paar Tage leben
in der hohen Zeit der Rosen,
atmen all, was mag entschweben
ihren Seelen, sonnerschlossen.
Jede, die erlischt, mög mir
die Vertraute sein,
und dass andre Rosen ihr
neues Blühn verleihn.
